NCR Registration: What It Means for You as a Borrower

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) is the body responsible for regulating South Africa's credit industry under the National Credit Act (NCA). Any business extending credit — including payday loans, personal loans and debt consolidation — must be registered with the NCR.

Registration means the lender is required to conduct an affordability assessment before granting credit, disclose all costs and fees upfront, and follow strict rules on reckless lending, debt collection conduct, and early settlement.

As a borrower, this gives you real protections: the right to see exactly what you're being charged, the right to settle early without unreasonable penalties, and a formal complaints escalation path through the NCR if a lender doesn't resolve an issue directly.

Always check a lender's NCR registration number before applying — legitimate registered credit providers display it prominently, not buried in the footer.
